Some details are worth keeping

A family portrait, a holiday snapshot, a familiar face in a faded album: old photographs connect us to people and places. Start with a digital copy, then choose the details you want to work on. Your original file stays with you.

Choose the care your photo needs

Use scratch repair for small marks and cracks, portrait enhancement for blurred faces, or color restoration for an existing color photo that has faded. For a broader starting point, choose General restoration. If you want to add color to a black-and-white photo, use the separate colorizer.

See the difference, side by side

Keep the original and edited version in the same frame. Move the comparison handle to look across the whole photograph, then take a closer look at faces, clothing and small details. You decide which version to keep.

Save your restored photo and share it with family

Once your photo has been restored, download it to your phone or computer. Save it in your photo library or share it with family. Keep your original scan for printing or future edits.

How to Restore Old Photos: A Practical Guide · Colorize photos

Questions before you begin

What can I use photo restoration for?

Photo restoration can repair small scratches and cracks, improve blurred facial details and refresh faded colors in digital copies of old photos. You can compare the edited photo with your original and download a separate copy.

How are restoration and colorization different?

Restoration aims to repair damage while retaining the original palette. Colorization adds estimated hues to black-and-white images and cannot verify the colors of the original scene.

Which image files are supported?

JPG, PNG and WebP are supported, up to 10 MiB and 24 megapixels per image. Photos are resized to a maximum of 1536 px on the longest side. Transparent areas become white.

Is my photo uploaded when I choose it?

Choosing a file only previews it in your browser. Only when you submit is your photo sent through our server to the configured AI provider.

How many free attempts are available?

Up to 3 free AI attempts per network each day, shared by restoration and colorization. The allowance resets at 00:00 UTC. Downloads do not count. A submitted attempt may count even if processing fails; availability also depends on service capacity.

Can a restored face change?

It can. AI can change facial details or expressions. Compare the result with the original, particularly the eyes, mouth and face shape, before deciding to use it.

Why can a request fail?

A file may be unsupported or damaged, the provider may be unable to process it, or a request may time out. Check the message shown in the tool before submitting again. A task admitted for processing may count toward the usage allowance even if it later fails. The website does not automatically resubmit it.
